It can be a formidable task starting a home clean out, especially when you are selling your home. Renting a dumpster while you are preparing to move doesn’t have to be! The following are some simple steps to hopefully get you started:

Schedule in time: Just as you would a doctor appointment, set aside time. Keep realistic expectations; house clean outs generally can not be done in a weekend!

Do an initial sweep: Go through each room taking out items that do not require too much thought (broken items, duplicates, expired paperwork etc). This will give you a clearer vision of your project and more room for sorting.

*This might be a time to consider renting a dumpster.

Organize: Go through remaining items and sort into 3 piles (keep, store, donate). This step can be the most overwhelming. Allow yourself a break or break up portions of a room when needed (office desk, children’s closet etc).

Putting the “keep” pile in its proper place: After you have dropped off items to be donated and loaded your dumpster, the keep pile needs to be attended. Be sure that the room an item is intended to be kept is fully gone through before you place it there.

Keep in Mind:

-Just because something is useful, does not mean you should keep it.

-If you don’t use it or it doesn’t bring you joy, it does not belong in your home.
