Prevent Illegal Dumping in your Dumpster

It is a standard policy that while a dumpster is located on your property, you are responsible for what is placed in it. Unfortunately, there are individuals that may take advantage of this and attempt to dump illegally.
While it has been a rare occurrence for our customers, it happens. Oftentimes these criminals are throwing in hazardous material or items that are expensive to dump. It can create a huge hassle for you and cost you precious time, energy and money you need for your current project you rented the dumpster for.
The following are six tips to consider to help you make this a less likely event.
1. Keep in Well Lit Area
Lighting is a deterrent to illicit behavior. If possible, place near existing lighting or consider putting up temporary lighting.
2. Cover the Dumpster
Place a tarp over your container when no one is working.
3. Avoid Street Placement
If possible, keep your dumpster away from public areas where others have easy access to the dumpster.
4. Post a Warning Sign
While many do not read or ignore signs, it can not hurt to place temporary signs near the dumpster to warn potential deviants about illegal dumping fines. A mention about the dumpster being under surveillance is wise (whether or not you have it) as it can also be a deterrent.
Consequences vary depending on the municipality. Getting caught dumping in another individual’s dumpster without permission can be punishable by $500+ fines and possible jail time.
5. Place Dumpster Under Surveillance
If you already have surveillance on your property, have the dumpster placed well within range. You can also consider temporarily putting up a trail camera. Surveillance and/or a sign stating the dumpster is under surveillance (whether it is present or not) can serve as a deterrent to some with nefarious schemes.
6. Minimize Length of Time the Dumpster is Present
Probably the most effective way to prevent a person dumping in your dumpster, is limit how long it sits on your property. If possible, consider having the majority of your project done before your dumpster delivery.
Enlist friends and family to help load; many hands make light work! You can entice them with a spread of goodies and refreshments. The less time a dumpster is sitting on your property, the less likely someone will be tempted to dump items in the dumpster you rented.
